" Everything has to be balanced, your thoughts, actions and even your Martial Arts. When for a while you have  trained more in a kind of hard,  external martial art like boxing, karate, etc., then switch to an internal one like tai chi and qi gong. You will then sense naturally a change in the focus and substance of your thinking and attitude. This does good to your physical and mental health and to your martial arts passion, making it sustainable and enyoyable for a lifetime. This is the Yin Yang  or the Tao of Martial Arts. / jun

Concept vs. Style

6/23/2021

"In Kamaytao we talk about Concept, not Style, since it has a more practical, straight- to-the- point meaning in relation to the Combat Art of Self-Defense and Sport, while  Style has a vaguer meaning. A Concept is a ready- made technical solution- that sort of Game Plan that MMA fighters use when preparing for a fight against a known opponent- the difference is that in Kamaytao the opponent and setting are unknown since it is about Self- defense, not sport - although a Kamaytao fighter can adapt and apply this concept also within a sport setting. Be that as it may, a Kamaytao practitioner can simply activate  this concept before the actual engagement according to the given self- defense situation, as opposed to just pure reflex reactions when engaged in a fighting situation." - jun

kamaytao and martial arts tradition

"KamayTao is an intuitive martial art (ima) and draws its inspiration from the traditional Okinawan Karatedo and the Chinese martial art Tai Chi Chuan,  but  not from any  teaching and style, but from the original spirit of self-defense.
For styles are limiting and confusing but the spirit provides freedom and freedom creates mental space and creativity. Whoever is creative, has more chance of surviving."- jun.

The staff and the spiritual warrior

Mastering the staff - or Khakkhara ( Sanskrit), Bo (Okinawan) or Shakujo (Japanese) -  is a fulfilling martial art journey by itself. The Bo is the first weapon that the Shaolin novice monk learns to master and the weapon handed to him by the Abbott if he leaves the monastery as a full- pledged monk. It is a good companion, a very artistic  tool and a formidable self- defense weapon. The martial arts tradition goes all the way back to India and - even more remote- to the Indo- Aryan people - a warrior society-  that inhabited the land that we now know as Ukraine, migrated to south of Europe, to Anatolia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan and India.

Shaolin warrior monks are Buddhists, and Buddha, who later in his life founded  the philosophy of Buddhism was himself a Kshatriya, a noble warrior, and being  the eldest son of local chieftain, was trained to be a warrior  by the age of six. Aside from academic subjects like politics, economics, Vedic religious texts, literature and logic, his military training was rigorous: by the age of 16, Buddha had to demonstrate his mastery of the chariot, warhorse and elephant and his martial arts  skills like empty hand combat and weapons like bow, sword, spear (staff), club, battle axe, thrown iron discus and trident, lasso and other abilities like fencing, wrestling, swimming, horsemanship and archery from a moving chariot. His training then even  surpassed the modern MMA and basic  military training! With all this incredible foundation, he later chose the internal aspect of martial arts and he worked and transformed himself to a spiritual warrior monk that we know today.

Rigorous training

KamayTao  students must be  willing to focus on rigorous self-defense training. And although instructions are held in groups, the instructor focuses on each student's attainment of his or her maximum potential at the given level. Hence, classes are kept small in size so that the instructor has time to attend to each one.

Fullness and Emptiness

"Kamaytao is both the way of the empty and weaponed Hand. Hence, KamayTao training involves also the use of weapons and emphasizes the human personality to whom these Hands are attached. The fact that each student has a very personal way of using and relating to his/her Hands, the KamayTao training aims, therefore, at the maximization of this aspect so that a very personal style also evolves in each student while training in KamayTao. All the more, KamayTao becomes a very personal self-defense art if we consider now the whole body and psychology of each student, his strengths and natural patterns of motion. In this way, KamayTao practitioner becomes an instinctive and intuitive martial artist able to freely express his/herself in any urban combat situation."

a greater mind

"Don't talk about things, events and people that would only bring you to a defensive, aggressive or even superior mode because all of these act the same: they put your ego to the front and block your mind from a greater understanding of things. Rather act with a greater mind, talk with a deeper wisdom." jun kamaytao
